LINEAR RAILROAD

In a very unusual winter for 6 weeks the average snow
fall was recorded at 4 inches the first week, 7.3 inches
the second week and 20.5 inches the 6 week.

(a) Can we assume a linear function for the average snow fall over the time period.

(b) If so what was the average snow fall the 5th week?

(c) Illustrate the data via a table, a graph and a formula.

(d) Write a formula that gives the week when a certain average snow fall occurred

 (c) Table, formula and graph
Word Problem

Given week 1 and y(1) = 4 in., week 2 and y(2) = 7.3 in. And week 6 and y(6) = 20.5 in.

Slope is constant, m = 3.3 in. / week

Formula

y= 4 + 3.3 t

Table

t y
0(week 1) 4
1 (week 2) 7.3
2 (week 3) 10.6
3 (week 4) 13.9
4 (week 5) 17.2
5 (week 6) 20.5

(a) Are the rate constant average inches per week?

(b) 20.5 inches
