Lesson 3b Formula for Linear Functions

Section 1.4 #6 Rewrite an equation in slope intercept form, y = mx + b.

Section 1.4 # 10 Write linear formula given m = 3 and y-int, b = 8.

Section 1.4 #11 Write linear formula given 2 points (-1, 5) and (2, -1).

Using point (-1, 5) in equation y = mx + b

So formula is

Section 1.4 #29 From the function find:

(a) Write v for t = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4

t 0 1 2 3 4
v 1,000 990.2 980.4 970.6 960.8

(b) The speed is decreasing at a rate of 9.8 meters per second or (-9.8 m/s)

(c) the slope -9.8 is the rate at which the velocity so changing, the 1000 is the initial velocity.

(d) We expect the rate, m to me slower

-9.8 < m < 0

*Section 1.4 #35 Mixed linear problem.

Let x = # coworker meeting (2 hr.) and y = # client meetings (3 hr.).

Total weekly hours is 10*6=60

So Number of weekly Meetings are:

(a) Graphs or points on line

When x = 0, y = 60 / 3 = 20 and when y = 0, x = 60/2 = 30; So points are (0, 20) and (30, 0)

(b) Slope

So linear formula is

(c) y-intercept is 20, when there is no coworker meeting the consultant can hold 20 client meetings.

slope is -2/3, means that for every 2 client additional meetings the consultant must sacrifice 3 coworker meetings.

(d) For change (x, takes 1.5 hr. for each meetings)

New points: (0, 20) and (40, 0) since when y = 0, x = 60 / (3/2) = 40
